KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • US$8.8 billion covers January-February only
  • Lighting exports rose about 17% year on year
  • Compare export value with shipment volume
  • Compete through compliance and product value

01A Strong Start for Lighting Exports

According to China Association of Lighting Industry reporting based on data from the General Administration of Customs, China's lighting product exports totaled approximately US$8.8 billion in January and February 2026. This represented year-on-year growth of about 17% and around 2.2% of China's mechanical and electrical product exports.

The figures cover the first two months only. They should not be presented as a full-year result or used to assume that every lighting category grew at the same rate.

02Which Product Categories Grew

Several major luminaire categories recorded growth in both volume and value. The association highlighted fixed luminaires, selected photovoltaic LED lighting products, searchlights and spotlights among the stronger categories.

Reported export-volume growth for these groups was approximately 27%, 19% and 28%, while corresponding export-value growth was about 6%, 19% and 34%. The different rates reveal changes in product mix and average value.

03Volume and Value Must Be Read Together

A rise in unit shipments does not automatically mean stronger profitability. When volume grows faster than export value, average unit value may be under pressure because of product mix, competition or market destination.

Exporters should therefore track value, volume, margin, warranty cost and payment risk together instead of using shipment growth as the only performance indicator.

04What Exporters Should Watch in 2026

Demand conditions, tariffs, certification, exchange rates, freight, raw materials and local inventory can quickly change the export outlook. Europe, emerging markets and Belt and Road markets may offer opportunities, but each has different technical and commercial requirements.

Lighting suppliers need market-specific product documentation, safety evidence, photometric data and reliable after-sales support.

05A Practical Market Strategy

Segment customers by application and compliance needs rather than competing only on price. Build export offers around verifiable optical performance, colour quality, controls, serviceability and delivery reliability.

The early-2026 data is encouraging, but sustainable growth will depend on product value, regulatory readiness and stronger relationships with international project partners.
